It almost always forms a syllable of its own - unless the base word ends in D or T. In painted and added, it’s an extra syllable. 👂In jumped, we hear the /t/ sound and in lied we hear /d/. This is shorthand for what we call the 111 rule. If a word has one syllable with one vowel, followed by just one constant then you double that constant before adding a suffix – when the suffix begins with the vowel. The reason this works in first grade is because almost every suffix teacher at that point starts with a vowel! We’ve got -ing and -ed and this works for those.
